Hey, I recently switched from chrome to safari on my Mac and my iPhone. I figured, while I'm at it, why not check out the Mail app on my Mac? Thing is, I'm having trouble justifying it.
I have a work gmail and a personal gmail. I have both accounts active in different Safari windows. I chat with friends in Hangouts in my personal account and coworkers in GChat in the work account.
I also frequently use Google drive for work. This setup works. Is there anything I'm missing by not using Mail.app?
I have two Gmail accounts and I use iCloud as my primary personal mail account. I use the Mail app so I can check all three inboxes simultaneously. Even if I didn't open it that often (and actually, I'm far more likely to use the Mail app on my iPad or iPhone instead) I'd still want to be signed in to the Mail app with all three accounts because I use the 'Share' buttons scattered throughout OS X quite often. Then again, I use Safari pretty much exclusively when I'm on the web.

Mail.app and most other mail clients don't really work well with Gmail due to the fact that it has a non-standard implementation of its mail access APIs. There are some very nice clients on the app store though.
