Apple’s Calculator app, included in OS X, is a handy tool for performing both quick calculations as well as more advanced functions. When calculating several numbers at once, however, it can become tedious to keep track of them, especially if you make a mistake at some point in the sequence. Thankfully, Apple includes a paper tape feature that many new (and even some veteran) Mac users have not yet discovered.
What makes CalcTape slightly more useful than the average Mac calculator is the combo of paper tape, digital, of course, with an option for notes for each line item in the calculation tape, and calculations can be saved. Luckily, the Mac Calculator app gives you a way to view, save, and print that paper tape. View the paper tape. To see each calculation you preform on the Calculator app, just follow these steps to open the paper tape. 1) Open the Calculator app. 2) Select Window from the menu. 3) Click Show Paper Tape.

To display your paper tape, press Command - T or go to Window > Show Paper Tape. A paper tape window will appear next to your calculator and will proceed to keep track of and display previous calculations and results. Here, for example, we’ll add up some receipts from a business trip. As we enter each dollar amount and press Return, the calculation and its solution are displayed from top to bottom in the paper tape window.
If a mistake is made, or if you need to stop entering calculations to tend to something else, the paper tape makes it easy to go back to the last correct calculation and resume from there. The paper tape will also keep track of multiple calculations as they are performed, allowing you to easily reference, or carry forward, previous results.

Once all of your calculations are complete, press “Clear” at the bottom of the paper tape window to clear all entries. Addition is most basic example of the benefits of the paper tape. Its value is enhanced further as more advanced calculations are performed. So if you’ve ever found yourself jotting down numbers in TextEdit or, heaven forbid, on a piece of paper, stop and immediately turn on Calculator’s paper tape function!
Unlike the iPhone, the iPad doesn’t come with a calculator app preinstalled. Which is a shame. But you’ll find many third party apps on the App Store that fill the void. If you’re looking for a simple, fully featured calculator that’s not bloated with ads or a bad UI, PCalc is basically the only option. It also comes with a useful widget and supports Split View.
PCalc Lite is the free app. That comes with basic and scientific calculation functionality as well as currency conversion. You can choose between two themes and a couple of app icons (if you’re running ). PCalc is the fully featured version. It costs $9.99 and if you’re a professional who likes to customize their calculator layout, it might just be worth it for you. The full version comes with a lot more themes and many more icons (I lost count).
The full version brings a paper tape, engineering, and scientific notation as well as full support for hexadecimal, octal and binary calculations. If you don’t want the full version, you can opt for specific features like themes, more conversion units, programmer features and more from the PCalc Lite app.
